Our State. Our Resources. Our Future.
About the Georgia Mining Association
Since 1972, the Georgia Mining Association (GMA) has been dedicated to helping mining companies and allied trade members thrive in a complex industry. Through education, networking, and political action, we protect and promote the mining industry in Georgia.
Who We Are
We’re the hardworking, dedicated miners who work daily to keep our nation productive, protect our environment through effective reclamation efforts, and maintain one of the safest mining industries in the nation.
We’re the experienced researchers, scientists, engineers, and professionals who strive to develop cleaner, safer, and more effective mining technologies and find new uses for our state’s mineral bounty.
We’re the teams who turn raw minerals into thousands of products that go into our nation’s infrastructure, the medicines and devices that keep us healthy, the foods we eat, and many of the things we use daily.
We’re the makers of the tools and technologies that make Georgia’s mines some of the safest, most environmentally sound, and most productive mines in the world.
By combining our voices, we’re able to grow and protect one of our state’s most valuable industries.
Our Mission
“The mission of the Georgia Mining Association is to advance and encourage the mineral resource industries of the State of Georgia, to provide information on legislative matters to the membership, and to create a better understanding among the people of Georgia about the importance of the mining industry.”
How We Carry Out Our Mission
Education
GMA collects and distributes information about the mining industry to our stakeholders and the public. Producing more than 20 industrial minerals that go into products ranging from cosmetics and housewares to industrial building materials and medical devices, Georgia’s mining industry is extensive.
Networking
We connect mining members, strategic members, and associate members to share resources, best practices, and more through our member-exclusive and industry-wide events. Our committees provide further opportunities for our members to get hands-on experience promoting Georgia’s mining industry.
Political Action
GMA monitors issues of concern to its members and represents Georgia’s mining industry at the Georgia General Assembly and with state and federal legislators. By speaking with one voice, GMA provides more effective representation for the mining and related industries.

Our History
The Georgia Mining Association (GMA) was founded in 1972 to assist Georgia mines in adapting to new state and federal laws requiring more environmental controls and reclamation efforts for surface mines. At the time, 26 mining companies extracted about $272 million in product value each year, and GMA’s annual budget was only $16,000.
Over time, GMA grew, eventually increasing to more than 50 mining companies. While corporate consolidations and mergers have reduced the number of operating companies, Georgia’s mining industry produces more material and employs more people than ever.
Today, 28 companies in the state mine $2.2 billion in product value each year and employ more than 13,000 Georgians. They do it cleanly and safely, reclaiming every single acre of worked land into a productive state and boasting one of the best safety records of any industry in Georgia.
